Esistono luoghi che, ancora prima di essere trasformati, chiedono di essere immaginati. Luoghi sospesi tra ciò che sono stati e ciò che potrebbero diventare, capaci di custodire nelle proprie mura tracce, suoni, energie e memorie. L’ex discoteca Alpheus, all’ombra del Gazometro, appartiene a questa categoria. Per anni spazio simbolo della notte romana, ha conservato anche nel silenzio del suo abbandono l’eco della musica, delle luci e delle persone che lo hanno attraversato. Progettare qui la nuova sede degli uffici Fremantle ha significato confrontarsi con questa memoria senza cancellarla, trasformandola invece nel punto di partenza di una nuova storia. Il primo gesto è stato quello dello sguardo: leggere gli spazi nella loro interezza, oltre il degrado e il tempo trascorso, intuendone le potenzialità. Alla riqualificazione e alla bonifica degli ambienti si è quindi affiancato un lavoro quasi archeologico di selezione: comprendere cosa conservare, cosa reinterpretare e cosa restituire alla contemporaneità attraverso una nuova funzione. Non una semplice trasformazione, dunque, ma una sovrapposizione di epoche. Il nuovo polo operativo Fremantle nasce dalla sintesi tra memoria e progetto, creatività e rigore. Un organismo complesso capace di riunire società e professionalità differenti all’interno di un unico racconto spaziale, articolato tra postazioni open space, aree coworking, uffici direzionali, sale riunioni, phone booth, spazi relax e luoghi dedicati alla convivialità. Gli ambienti diventano così parte di una narrazione continua. A scandirla sono anche i props di scena provenienti dai set cinematografici e dalle produzioni televisive più rappresentative della società: frammenti di mondi immaginari che entrano nello spazio reale e accompagnano chi lo attraversa, trasformando gli uffici in una sorta di backstage permanente della creatività Fremantle. Architettura, interior design, identità aziendale, memoria e benessere si sovrappongono come layer di uno stesso progetto. La funzionalità dialoga con l’estetica, le esigenze operative incontrano il carattere originario dell’edificio e ogni elemento contribuisce alla costruzione di un luogo pensato non soltanto per lavorare, ma per essere vissuto. Questa energia si manifesta già dall’ingresso principale. Qui, grandi ledwall a tutta altezza avvolgono la scala scenografica e trasformano la soglia in un’esperienza immersiva. È il punto in cui il passato dell’Alpheus sembra incontrare definitivamente il presente: le luci tornano ad accendersi, le immagini tornano a muoversi e lo spazio ritrova la propria vocazione allo spettacolo. Solo che questa volta la scena è cambiata. E dietro le quinte c’è Fremantle.

There are places that, even before being transformed, seem to ask to be imagined. Places suspended between what they once were and what they might become, still carrying within their walls traces, sounds, energy and memories. The former Alpheus nightclub, standing in the shadow of Rome’s Gazometro, is one of those places. For years, it was an iconic landmark of Roman nightlife, and even after falling silent, it continued to preserve the echoes of music, lights and people who once moved through its spaces. Designing the new Fremantle offices here meant engaging with that memory without erasing it, allowing it instead to become the starting point for a new story. The first act was one of vision: to read the space as a whole, beyond the signs of decay and the passage of time, and to recognise its latent potential. Alongside the redevelopment and remediation of the abandoned interiors, an almost archaeological process of selection began: understanding what should be preserved, what could be reinterpreted, and what might be brought back into the present through a new function. Not simply a transformation, then, but an overlap of different eras. Fremantle’s new operational hub emerges from the balance between memory and design, creativity and rigour. A complex spatial organism capable of bringing together different companies and professional identities within one shared narrative, articulated through open-plan workstations, coworking areas, executive offices, meeting rooms, phone booths, relaxation spaces and areas devoted to informal gathering and conviviality. The interiors thus become part of a continuous story. That story is also shaped by set props taken from some of the company’s most recognisable film and television productions: fragments of fictional worlds entering the real one, guiding visitors through the building and turning the workplace into a permanent backstage of Fremantle’s creative universe. Architecture, interior design, corporate identity, memory and wellbeing overlap like layers within the same project. Functionality enters into dialogue with aesthetics, operational needs meet the original character of the building, and every element contributes to shaping a place designed not only for work, but to be experienced. This energy is immediately revealed at the main entrance. Here, full-height LED walls frame the sculptural staircase and transform the threshold into an immersive experience. It is the point where the past of Alpheus seems to finally meet the present: the lights come back on, the images begin to move again, and the space rediscovers its natural vocation for spectacle. Only this time, the stage has changed. And behind the scenes, there is Fremantle.
